PART A (Answer Any 2 Questions, 2 x 5 = 10 Marks)

1. Write a note on classification of turbines.

2. List out the differences between impulse turbine and reaction turbine.

3. A jet of water coming out of 6 cm diameter nozzle with a velocity of 18 m/s strikes at the centre of a symmetrical curved vane. 

The curved vane is moving with a velocity of 6 m/s in the direction of jet. After striking, the jet is deflected by an angle of 1650. Assume the vane is smooth and find out

a. Force exerted by the jet on the vane in the direction of jet

b. Power of the jet

c. Efficiency of the jet

PART B (Answer Any One Questions, 1 x 10 = 10 Marks)

4. A pelton wheel is operated by supplying water through a gross head of 525 m. One-third of gross head is lost in friction in the penstock. 

The nozzle diameter supplying the water is 20 cm and the side clearance angle ( vane angle at outlet ) is 150. Determine 

(i) Force exerted by the water on the bucket 

(ii) Power given by the water to the runner 

(iii) Hydraulic efficiency of the turbine. Take co-efficient of velocity = 0.98 and speed ratio = 0.45.

5. Write a note on
a. Surge tank 
b. Penstock 
c. Draft tube
